Well Care & Preventive Medicine

Girl with puppyDid you know that if detected early, 75% of common diseases in dogs and 63% of common diseases in cats can be prevented by dietary or lifestyle changes alone?

As pets age, just as in humans, arthritis can become a crippling problem. Early detection can help extend your pet’s life.

Beginning at an early age and through adulthood, pets should be monitored for common diseases like heartworm, thyroid disorders, intestinal parasites, kidney disease and many other conditions. Careful monitoring is key to detection and treatment of potentially serious problems.

We all know the expression, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” At the Veterinary Medical Center of Brooklyn, we know how true that can be. We strive to help you help your pets stay healthy.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are one the most important preventive measures you can take for the health of your dog or cat.

As puppies and kittens, your pets are at risk of developing fatal diseases if not adequately protected with a series of vaccinations.

When administered according to recommended guidelines, these vaccines are the foundation of your pet's protection from the many contagious diseases they may be exposed to throughout their lives.

Immunity to most infectious diseases gradually declines over time so annual revaccination is recommended for both dogs and cats.

Exotic & Avian Medicine

Exotic birdIs your pet a bird or perhaps something even more exotic? Don’t worry, they can still be a part of our family.

Whether it be routine trimming of nails, beaks or teeth, or a more serious medical problem, we are fully equipped to tend to your pet’s needs.

Dr. Hunziker started the exotics department at the Animal Medical Center and has over 30 years of experience in this area.

We routinely treat birds, guinea pigs and rabbits (even though the doctor is allergic). Don’t be surprised to see rats or hamsters at the office – we treat them, too.

Cancer Medicine

As in human cancer medicine, early detection is key. Pet owners need to be proactive in monitoring their pets for any new growths or lumps and for changes in their appetite or behavior. The sooner these problems can be investigated, the greater the chances of successful treatment. All new lumps should be evaluated by a doctor and samples submitted to the lab for testing.

Sadly, the results sometimes indicate the presence of cancer. Although this can be a devastating diagnosis, we can offer you many treatment options. These can range from surgery to remove the abnormal growth to a program of chemotherapy. Not every treatment option is suited to all pets and their families so we can help you decide upon the best course of treatment for your specific situation.

We aim to diagnose and do what we can to cure as quickly and compassionately as possible.

Behavioral Medicine

Whether you have a dog who’s anxious or aggressive, a cat who refuses to use its litter box, or a bird that insists on chewing out its feathers, we can offer you a solution.

Very often, an underlying medical problem may cause your pet to exhibit a behavior that is undesirable. It is important to determine the root of the problem. In many instances, what manifests itself as a behavioral problem may in fact be a treatable medical condition.

Should this not be the case with your pet, we can still offer you a behavioral management program to enable you to live together happily.

Ophthalmic Medicine

Even though you can’t expect your pet to read an eye chart, they may still develop conditions that would require them to have an ophthalmic exam.

Our facility is fully equipped to diagnose and treat all eye conditions and diseases. We have specialized equipment on the premises that allows the doctor to monitor eye pressure, measure tear production, check for corneal ulcers, and detect various ophthalmic problems.

Surgical intervention may be indicated if your pet’s condition cannot be managed solely with medication. Dr. Hunziker routinely performs a wide range of ophthalmic procedures.

Geriatric Medicine

Old dogAge is not just a number but also a measure of the effects of aging on the body. How your pet ages depends on variables such as genetics, nutrition and environment.

A proper diet and suitable environment are critical to your pet’s continued health and comfort.

We will advise you on modifications for your aging pet. For dogs these may include a special diet or exercise regimen specific to the pet’s needs. For cats, recommendations may be easier access to litter boxes, a special diet or extra assistance with routine grooming.

New medications are now available that are safe and effective for pain management, arthritis, cognitive dysfunction syndrome, and other age related diseases.

Although annual exams may be sufficient for younger pets, since dogs & cats age more rapidly than people, your older dog or cat should be examined at least twice per year.

Diagnostics

Technician performing diagnosticsWith today’s medical testing and technology, you can protect your pets like never before.

A comprehensive physical exam is the first step in detecting a medical problem, but there are many conditions that cannot be diagnosed by an exam alone.

We have on-site digital radiology and electrocardiography, as well as a veterinary-specific blood pressure monitor.

We utilize the lab services of Idexx Laboratories, which affords us the added benefit of consults with Board Certified specialists. There are also many tests that we perform in-house to provide you with immediate results.

Should your pet require an ultrasound, you’ll never have to travel to another facility – a mobile unit will come right to our office.

Surgery
